Modern
dry ridge / dry verge roofing systems
are now a building control requirement on all new roofs since the introduction of BS 5534 as they greatly reduce the risk of storm damage and have a lifespan three times that of ridge tiles which are cemented in place. That's because cement deteriorates over time and needs to be re-pointed every 20 to 25 years or so to prevent the ridge tiles from becoming loose and falling off in high winds.
Dry roofing systems, rather than relying on mortar for a bond, use a dry fix system, typically screws to attach clamps between the joints of every ridge tile, clamping them to the roof. Together with dry verge capping at the gable ends of your house, your roof becomes significantly stronger and far far more able to cope with extreme weather conditions.
